Description
Calcium hydroxide 95%, also known as slaked lime or hydrated lime, is a white, odorless powder with the chemical formula Ca(OH)â‚‚. It has a strong alkaline nature (high pH) and limited solubility in water.
A 95% purity grade is commonly available for technical and industrial applications.
INCI: Calcium Hydroxide is the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients designation.
APPEARANCE: Appears as a white or almost white fine powder, odorless.
APPLICATION: PH Regulator / Buffer
Calcium hydroxide is primarily used to maintain or adjust the pH of skincare and haircare formulations. It helps protect sensitive actives, ensures preservatives work effectively, and maintains texture and feel.
GRADE: Cosmetic.
USAGE RATE: Calcium hydroxide use is permissible if the final product pH is maintained below 11.
pH RANGE: A saturated solution (limewater) reaches around pH 12.6 at 20 °C. Generally, it’s a strongly alkaline (basic) substance with solutions typically between pH 12–13.
SOLUBILITY: In Water: 1.7 g/L at 20 °C – modest solubility; retrograde behavior: 1.89 g/L at 0 °C, decreasing to 0.66 g/L at 100 °C. Other Solvents: soluble in glycerol and acids; insoluble in ethanol.
ORIGIN: China.
BENEFIT: Calcium hydroxide is primarily used to stabilize pH in cosmetic formulations—protecting delicate active ingredients, supporting preservative efficacy, and maintaining texture and comfort.
