Description

Gluconolactone is a naturally occurring chemical compound that belongs to the family of lactones (a type of cyclic ester). It is a derivative of gluconic acid, which is formed when glucose undergoes oxidation. Gluconolactone is commonly used in the cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industries due to its multifunctional properties. Chemical Formula of C6H10O6.

Gluconolactone is a naturally derived Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) produced by the oxidation of glucose. It is a gentle exfoliating, moisturizing, and antioxidant ingredient that slowly hydrolyzes into gluconic acid in water, making it much milder than traditional Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). It is suitable for sensitive skin and helps improve skin texture while supporting the skin’s natural barrier.

Cosmetic and Skincare Industry:

  • Exfoliation: Gluconolactone is often used as a gentle exfoliant in skincare products. It belongs to a group of ingredients known as polyhydroxy acids (PHAs), which are similar to alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) but are less irritating. It helps to remove dead skin cells, promote skin renewal, and improve skin texture.
  • Moisturizing: Gluconolactone has humectant properties, meaning it helps the skin retain moisture, which is beneficial for hydration.
  • Antioxidant: It also has antioxidant properties, protecting the skin from oxidative stress and helping to reduce the visible effects of aging.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Due to its mild nature, gluconolactone can soothe and reduce irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Anti-aging: Regular use of gluconolactone can help minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and improve skin tone due to its exfoliating and moisturizing effects.

Food Industry:

  • Acidulant: Gluconolactone is used as an acidulant in food processing, particularly in baked goods, beverages, and dairy products. It helps regulate the pH of foods and acts as a stabilizer.
  • Preservative: It is also used to extend the shelf life of certain products by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms.
  • Sugar Substitute: In some cases, gluconolactone may be used in sugar-reduced formulations to modify sweetness or texture.
